Lip Injections

A little goes a long way, and this certainly holds true for Volbella®, one of the newer members of the Juvederm® family of dermal fillers from Allergan. With Volbella® lip injections by Lancaster, PA, plastic surgeon Dr. Scott M. Gayner, patients can tackle two concerns at once – thin lips and vertical lip lines.

Dr. Gayner performs all lip injections at our practice, so patients can rest assured that they will receive high standards of care from a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon.

Our Volbella® lip injections for Lancaster, PA, and surrounding area patients can smooth vertical lip lines while providing a subtle volume boost to lips. To request a consultation and learn more, Request a consultation or by phone at (717) 728-1700.

Why Volbella®?

When people hear the term “lip injections”, they often think of significant plumping to the lips. Lip injections with Volbella®, however, are slightly different. They add relatively subtler dose of volume than the average lip filler, while simultaneously smoothing the vertical lip lines (most visible while performing specific actions such as drinking from a straw) that form around the mouth.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is naturally produced in our bodies. The product retains water like a sponge and provides moisture and suppleness to various elements of the body, making it one of the primary building blocks of skin (along with collagen and elastin). As we age, this production slows down significantly, resulting in the volume loss that causes lips to thin and vertical lip lines to show even when the mouth is at rest.

Fillers for lip injections are typically formulated with a lab-synthesized version of hyaluronic acid. Each type of filler is formulated as gels rather than liquids, with varying textures to suit the needs of each area of the face. Volbella® is a soft, smooth formulation of HA. It is the first dermal filler the FDA has approved to correct vertical lip lines and increase lip fullness.

Volbella® lip injections are particularly popular with our patients in their mid-30s and up, as they come to our practice looking for a way to correct both these concerns. For those who would like to add more significant volume to their lips, Dr. Gayner may recommend another dermal filler to be used for lip injections.

What to Expect from Treatment with Lip Injections

Lip injections are a relatively quick, minimally invasive treatment, with each session lasting between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on what is being addressed. The amount of filler used, as well as the number of injections administered, will depend on how much correction is required.

Each injection will be placed using a very fine needle or microcannula in and around key areas of the lips, and Dr. Gayner may gently massage the areas for even distribution and shaping. For patients concerned about discomfort from lip injections, we use a short-acting numbing injection to make the visit virtually painfree. Volbella® and other Juvederm® fillers labelled with an “XC” are formulated with lidocaine, a pain-relieving agent that further minimizes discomfort.

After treatment, you may experience mild to moderate side effects, such as swelling, bruising, and/or tenderness/numbness at the injection sites. These typically subside within two to three days after injection, and do not stop patients from resuming their usual activities. Once any swelling subsides, you will be able to clearly see the effects of the fillers.

On average, the results from Volbella® last about a year. However, this can vary from patient to patient, and maintenance treatments may be scheduled accordingly.

Complementary Treatments to Lip Injections

Some patients who receive lip injections are often looking for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Gayner offers quick-recovery facelifts, as well as non-surgical facelifts that may include the use of dermal fillers, and neuromodulators such as BOTOX® Cosmetic.
