Otoplasty
Protruding ears, particularly in children, can lead to self-consciousness and poor adaptation to school. Many adults have lived with the embarrassment for years, perhaps unaware of the impact it is having on their lives. If you are ready to make a change for yourself or for your child in Harrisburg, otoplasty (ear surgery) can alleviate the emotional discomfort of large or protruding ears. Dr. Scott Gayner is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with the training and experience to make your ear surgery a success. With two children of his own, Dr. Gayner also has the sensitivity to care for and work with your young child.
When it comes to otoplasty, conventional wisdom indicates that the surgery should be performed as soon as possible after the ears have reached full size, usually when a child is around 5 or 6 years old. However, adults are candidates for this surgery as well.

The Procedure
In Central Pennsylvania, otoplasty is performed in an ambulatory surgery center under sedation or general anesthesia. With incisions made behind the ear, skin and cartilage are removed to achieve the desired effect. Sutures are used inside the ear to create and secure newly shaped cartilage.
