What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck surgically removes excess abdominal skin and fat and tightens the area to create a smooth, contoured midsection. In some cases, it can also eliminate a belly bulge caused by diastasis recti, a condition in which abdominal muscles are weakened or separated because of significant weight fluctuations or pregnancy.

What Is Involved in a Full Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Stratis performs tummy tuck surgery using general anesthesia. He begins the surgery by making a horizontal incision along the lower abdomen, below the line of most underwear and swimsuits. Dr. Stratis removes excess fat and skin and also repairs weakened abdominal muscles if needed. He may make a second incision around your navel to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen. Patients usually stay in the hospital the night of the procedure.

What’s the Difference Between a Mini Tummy Tuck and a Full Tummy Tuck?

The full tummy tuck rejuvenates the abdomen from below the ribcage down to the pubic bone. The mini tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat below the belly button and tightens the lower abdominal muscles. Patients whose concerns are limited to the area below the belly button may be candidates for a mini tummy tuck instead of a full tummy tuck.

Should I Get Lipo or a Tummy Tuck?

If you are bothered by stubborn pockets of fat and don’t have much excess skin, you may want to consider one of the liposuction methods offered by Dr. Stratis. These methods can be less invasive than a full tummy tuck and may allow for shorter and more comfortable recovery.

People considering plastic surgery travel from Lancaster, York, and throughout central Pennsylvania to our practice. To learn more about tummy tuck surgery, request a consultation with Dr. Stratis online or call his office at (717) 728-1700.

Can a Tummy Tuck Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. A tummy tuck is often performed as part of a Mommy Makeover, which usually includes procedures such as a breast lift or breast augmentation with breast implants. If you are interested in including facial procedures as part of your Mommy Makeover, Dr. Stratis’s partner, Dr. Scott Gayner, performs the surgery with Dr. Stratis handling the body contouring procedures.

What Is a Male Tummy Tuck?

Weight changes and aging can leave their marks on a man’s midsection. “Spare tires” and “beer bellies” are typical problems for men; ab muscles and tissues become weaker with age. If abdominal fat is excessive or persists for an extended length of time, the skin and muscles can become permanently stretched. Fortunately, Dr. Stratis specializes in “gut tucks,” or male tummy tuck surgery. Men in Lancaster, York, and surrounding central Pennsylvania cities travel to our plastic surgery practice to have Dr. Stratis perform their procedures.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Tummy Tuck?

It will probably be 6 weeks before you can return to all of your usual activities, although you will be up and about long before then with a slimmer, firmer abdomen. Abdominoplasty is major surgery, so it’s important to allow yourself enough time to rest, recover, and heal. Be sure to avoid stretched positions that would place strain on your incisions or on the sutured abdominal muscles.

How Long Does a Tummy Tuck Last?

If you take care of yourself, eat well, and exercise often, the results of your tummy tuck will be long-lasting.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Safe?

All surgeries carry some risk, but tummy tuck surgeries are generally considered safe if they are performed on a suitable candidate by a board-certified plastic surgeon and board-certified anesthesiologist in an accredited facility. Any discomfort or pain you experience during your recovery will be managed with medication.

Can I Still Get Pregnant After an Abdominoplasty?

Tummy tuck surgery will not affect your ability to get pregnant. However, we advise that you wait until you are finished having children before scheduling a tummy tuck since future pregnancies will stretch out the skin that was tightened during your tummy tuck procedure.

How Many Dress Sizes Should I Expect To Lose After a Tummy Tuck?

Although everyone is different, the average tummy tuck patient loses about 2 to 3 dress sizes once post-surgical swelling subsides.
