The Procedure

Because breast reconstruction can be performed after mastectomy or at the same time as your mastectomy, Dr. Stratis has developed close working relationships with oncologists and general surgeons. There are several techniques that can be used for breast reconstruction:

  • A TRAM flap uses donor muscle and tissue from your abdomen. This tissue can be tunneled up through the chest wall (and remain attached to its original blood supply) or completely removed and relocated to form the breast mound.
  • A latissimus dorsi flap uses tissue from your back as opposed to your abdomen. Although a latissimus dorsi flap can sometimes form a new breast mound, in most cases it is used in conjunction with a breast implant.
  • A tissue expander can be used to create room for a breast implant.
  • Saline or silicone breast implants in Harrisburg, PA, can be used after tissue expansion or flap techniques.

Recovery and Results

Recovery differs with each patient based on the methods used for reconstruction. Generally, there will be some swelling and discomfort after surgery that will fade over the course of several weeks. When recovery is complete, you should see a reconstructed breast that looks and feels natural. Although there will be some visible scars, they will improve over time.
